On April 29, professional poker player Tom Dwan began posting erratic messages on X (formerly Twitter) from the Park Royal Centre for Mental Health in West London. In one tweet, he claimed hospital staff were attempting to either kill him or severely damage his brain through forced treatment.
The posts were cryptic and disjointed, with mentions of foreign intelligence agencies and the “US operational command.” Dwan claimed his drinking water had been tampered with and implied his phone was compromised.
He also tagged a number of high-profile political figures, including former U.S. President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.
Signs of a Mental Health Crisis?
Many of the tweets suggested that Dwan, a casino legend, might have been suffering from persecutory delusions, which are typically seen in cases of acute psychosis or manic episodes involving psychotic symptoms.
In one post, Dwan alleged that UK police officers had physically harmed him, breaking his rib and hand, and potentially puncturing a lung. However, PokerNews UK’s Will Shillibier visited Dwan in the facility and confirmed he appeared to be in good health and physically uninjured.
After 21 days in the facility, a noticeably more coherent Dwan tweeted that he was on his way back to the United States. He also announced plans to pursue legal action against the hospital.
“I’ll be filing complaints, lawsuits, and sharing some updates through official channels,” he wrote.
He firmly denied that drugs played any role in his hospitalisation.

Legal Grounds for Detention?
Under the UK’s Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended in 2007), a person can be detained if they’re considered a risk to themselves or others due to a mental disorder. Detention under Section 2 allows for assessment and treatment for up to 28 days. Section 3 enables longer-term treatment lasting up to six months.
This decision must involve two doctors and an approved mental health professional. Importantly, under these laws, treatment can proceed without the patient’s consent if deemed necessary for their wellbeing or public safety.
Individuals detained under the Act retain specific rights, such as legal representation and the ability to appeal to a Mental Health Tribunal.
If Dwan’s detention complied with these legal standards, his chances of winning a legal case would be limited. However, he asserts that staff at Park Royal did not follow protocol.
He tweeted that his rights were ignored: “They confiscated my phone and devices, ignored multiple requests for medical care and legal access, and isolated me from all contact for nearly two weeks.”
Dwan admitted that his phone was taken after he posted a photo of an NHS staff member to his 200,000+ followers.
What Sparked the Hospitalisation?
The exact reasons behind Dwan’s detention remain unclear. Early tweets suggested paranoia—he mentioned that someone posing as a flight attendant had tampered with his phone mid-flight to London, including wiping its browser history.
He claimed this was part of a plot to fabricate criminal charges against him.
On the Mania podcast, fellow poker pro Daniel Negreanu discussed the situation. He stated that Dwan had flown to London to meet someone—whose identity Negreanu didn’t disclose—but had acted strangely at the airport.
Negreanu expressed concern but noted Dwan had shown signs of erratic behaviour before. He shared a story from years ago in Las Vegas when Dwan insisted on removing Negreanu’s phone battery before a private conversation, which turned out to be nothing serious.
“He’s always had this saviour complex,” said Negreanu. “He sees a global issue and thinks, ‘I’ll fix it. Let me talk to Putin or Kim Jong Un.’ And the thing is—he genuinely believes he can.”
